So here’s a little history…
Gary and I met at work. I had been working at a daycare center, but it wasn’t paying well. A friend of the family offered me a job at their company (where Gary worked) and I accepted.
According to Gary, he was told by said friend to leave me alone! After all, I’m a good clean Christian girl and Gary… Well, let’s just say he’d had his fair share of experience with most things worldly.
So there began his attempt to avoid me, although as soon as I saw him I wasn’t letting that happen.
Gary has this sense of humor that always makes you grin. I was so attracted to his sense of humor!
We became friends quickly. I heard about his girlfriend (not my favorite topic), his friends, learned about his interesting taste in music (Avail and NoFX to name a few… ugh), and his love of extreme sports. His current hobby was dirt biking.
We discovered our shared interest in movies. We’d talk about new movies that were coming out, and give our reviews after we’d seen them. We’d often say, “Hey, have you seen (insert movie title here) yet?”.
One movie in particular we’d been looking forward to was “Little Nicky” with Adam Sandler (I know, why?!). He came into the area where I worked one day and asked, “Hey, have you seen Little Nicky yet?”, to which I responded, “No, not yet!”.
So he says, “You wanna go see it?”.
My heart skipped a beat!
“Sure!”, I said.
“OK, you go see it and tell me how it was.”, he says.
I am sure I must have turned a thousand shades of red, and he walked out of the room laughing his obnoxious laugh and smiling at me with that smile.
Through following weeks, the same scenario played out… He’d ask me if I’d seen a movie, I’d say no, he’d ask if I wanted to go see it and I’d laugh and say, “Sure, I’ll go see it and tell you how it was.”, or something of the like.
Then one day he messed up… He asked me if I’d seen “Joe Dirt” (again, why?!). I hadn’t and said no, but this time he asked, “You wanna go see it with me?”.
I said, “Uh, you said it wrong! You didn’t leave yourself an out.”, and he said, “No, I want to know if you wanna go see it with me?”.
After a year of friendship, that was our first date. We dated for a year before he popped the question, and got married almost a year later. We were married on March 22, 2003 at our church and honeymooned in Maui.
These last 6 years have been the best of my life! I’ve found happiness I never expected or could have dreamed of. Together we’ve created 3 gorgeous children who are our pride and joy. I got to witness Gary give his life to God and we’ve grown spiritually together.
I know there are many people who feel that you just fall in love with someone and it’s “fate”. I feel differently. I believe God has that someone picked out for you, and if you pray hard enough and sincerely enough, he’ll lead you straight to them. Just before I started working there with Gary was the time I decided I needed to get serious about praying for God’s direction to the one He chose for me. Everyday on my way to work, that was my focus in prayer. Not in a million years would I have thought then that Gary would be the one, yet here we are, all these years later!
How did I know he was the one? For some people, their spiritual experiences come through dreams, visions, or hearing that still small voice speaking to them. For me, every spiritual experience I’ve had has been an absolute knowledge, accompanied by that overwhelming feeling of God’s spirit. After Gary and I had been dating for almost a year, and after praying for 2 years, I got my answer. He was the one.
Thank you Lord, for bringing me the best man a girl could ever ask (or pray!) for.
And thank you Gary, for the best years of my life. Thank you for your love, your understanding, your friendship. I am so blessed to be spending the rest of my life with you. I love you!!
***Sorry about the poor quality of some of the pics! Most of my wedding photos are still on 35mm film…These are pics of those pics.***
