It’s very important to teach our children good water drinking habits. After all, our bodies need water to survive and function properly! Living in Arizona where it’s hot most of the year, it’s especially important to me to keep my kids properly hydrated.
Our pediatrician recommended starting water around 7 months old. This meant shopping for a good sippy cup! With so many options out there, it’s easy to just grab one that looks cute and go with that. Unfortunately, that didn’t work well for me. I quickly discovered many frustrations, from the multiple parts to clean and assemble, to leakage, to the difference in spouts.
My other kids never could figure out the sippy cups which had to be tipped up to drink from. After spending money on a few different kinds of cups with my first, I finally gave up completely, until one day I discovered he could drink from my straw! I kept one of the tip style cups (just in case) and bought a straw cup. It worked! I tried the tip style with my second and third child, who also had trouble. All of them were straw kids, and had their straw sippy cups mastered by 8 months. So with Connor I didn’t even try the tip style sippy cup, just tried the straw cup at 7 months and he had it figured out in minutes!
A friend of mine recently shared her love of Tommee Tippee cups, so I was interested in trying them out. I chose the Li’l Sippee Flip Top Straw Cups to review. These cups come in fun, bright colors, and are dishwasher and microwave safe! They hold 13oz of liquid, which is much more generous than many other brands you can purchase.
I am always on the lookout for a good straw cup that doesn’t spill. It seems like many of the ones I’ve found that are supposed to be spill-proof still leak. A lot of them seem to randomly spout water out of the top when the cup is upright! I am so thrilled that the Flip Top Straw Cup doesn’t leak- at all! The top seals well and the flip cap stays closed when you close it. No more water all over the floor or counter, no more finding my diaper bag soaked because the cup is leaking in it. Yay!
This cup is easy to assemble. Some sippy cups have so many intricate, confusing pieces you have to disassemble to clean, then reassemble when you’re ready to use the cup again. This cup has just a few pieces to put together, and they go together very easily!
I also love how easy it is to clean. Many of the kids’ cups require a bottle brush to be able to clean well; there’s no way your hand and a sponge can fit down into it. These Flip Top Straw Cups are wide enough that I can fit my hand and sponge into it and clean it well all the way down to the bottom.
If you own (or later purchase) more Tommee Tippee cups, you’ll be happy to know that the lids and handles are interchangeable with other Li’l Sippees cups and Closer To Nature bottles!
My only frustration with this cup is how easy the inside straw piece comes apart from the top silicone straw piece. Connor, being 10 months old, likes to play the drop and retrieve game. He drops the cup from his high chair and waits to get it back. He also likes to bang it on the floor or high chair to make noise. These activities cause lots of jarring on the cup, causing the straw to fall out, thus keeping him from getting anything out of it when he tries to drink. He gets frustrated, and I find myself getting my hands wet fishing for the straw. I’d love to see it connect a little tighter to the silicone straw piece to keep it from falling out as easily.
Other than that minor issue, we love these cups! They are a great size and are easy for Connor to hold on his own.
