Domino Race from HearthSong: Review and Giveaway {2011 Holiday Gift Guide}

When thinking of children’s gifts to purchase, toys are almost always the first thing that comes to mind. For me, the hard part about purchasing toys is that so many are cheaply made, and don’t keep my children’s attention after a few days.  It’s so hard to find unique quality toys at retail and department stores; but I’m never quite sure where else to go!  Well, now I know…

HearthSong began in 1983, and offers children’s toys, games and crafts that are age-appropriate, wholesome, and great quality.  “The name HearthSong was chosen to reflect core family values – the Hearth, a traditional symbol for the center of the home, and Song, a symbol of family spirit and of a special playfulness that parents and children enjoy together.”

I was thrilled to see the fun, unique toys offered at HearthSong.  I finally chose a toy I felt would be great fun for our entire family and would bring hours of fun for years to come; The Classic Domino Race Special.  This includes a Domino Race Set (255 pieces) as well as the 24-piece add-on set.

I didn’t tell my kids about this, and they were thrilled to see it when it came! My 7 year old was especially excited.  It looks like fun anyway, but with it so colorful it caught their attention even more.

This set is for ages 4+.  My 4 and 5 year olds liked playing with the dominoes, using them for building roads and towers, but did find it more difficult to set up the dominoes to “race” without knocking them over (and lost patience trying).  We found that setting them up outside on our back patio made it easier, as the ground was much more level than the carpet or tile in the house and offered much more room for setting it up as well.

My 7 year old and I found true enjoyment setting up a course and watching them fall, one after another, up stairs, over bridges and through tunnels we had meticulously built.  It took a few tries and new ideas before we were finally able to get them all to fall one after the other without assistance, but we did it! Of course, the only video I have is of our first try, but you’ll get the idea…

The nice thing about this game is that it can be different every time. You can make it as simple or as intricate as you’d like.  And as I mentioned before, the pieces can be used to make buildings and roads and countless other creations for other imaginative play.

Because they’re made from solid wood, they’re quality enough to survive even the roughest, toughest kid!  I’m so glad to know they’ll last us for years to come, and that this is a toy we’ll be playing with when my youngest grows a bit older as well!  This set also comes with a bag for all the pieces, making clean-up easy (and mom happy)!

Buy It: You can purchase the Domino Race set like the one we reviewed from HearthSong for $49.98, and the 24-piece add-on set like we reviewed for $24.98.  OR you purchase both the Race Set and the Add-on Set together for $67.98 (a savings of $6.98)!
