We were recently invited to see Cique du Soleil KOOZA here in Phoenix.
KOOZA tells the story of The Innocent, a melancholy loner in search of his place in the world.
KOOZA is a return to the origins of Cirque du Soleil: It combines two circus traditions – acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. The show highlights the physical demands of human performance in all its splendor and fragility, presented in a colorful mélange that emphasizes bold slapstick humor.
The Innocent’s journey brings him into contact with a panoply of comic characters such as the King, the Trickster, the Pickpocket, and the Obnoxious Tourist and his Bad Dog.
Between strength and fragility, laughter and smiles, turmoil and harmony, KOOZA explores themes of fear, identity, recognition and power. The show is set in an electrifying and exotic visual world full of surprises, thrills, chills, audacity and total involvement.
I had heard of Cirque du Soleil before and had seen a few small teaser performances on morning television shows over the years. I assumed I pretty much knew what it was going to be like and was eager to go see it.
My husband, on the other hand, was not. I forced him to go with me since I thought it would be a nice date night for us, but he was not the least bit thrilled with the idea.
When we walked up we were surprised to see the tent the show was being held in… It looked much smaller than we thought! But when we walked in we realized why; there is no poor seating under the big top. Cirque du Soleil could easily hold their event in a huge arena with thousands of seats and rake in the cash, but they don’t. It was awesome to see that no matter where you sit you’re going to get a great view!
We took our seats and waited for the show to begin. The clowns were great pre-show entertainment and made the waiting go by so much quicker. And then the show began…
All I can say is WOW.
I felt like a kid again, unable to keep my eyes off of the stage for even a moment. I was on the edge of my seat from moment one and was wowed and awed constantly. At intermission I was beyond excited to know that we were only halfway through with the show, and I couldn’t wait to see what was coming next! By the end of the show I was beyond amazed- It was far beyond what I had expected. There were amazing acrobatic acts- some fascinating, others terrifying- and hilarious clown acts. Whenever the entertainment was intense, a comical act immediately followed to lighten the mood again.
I was also amazed to see that the music was live through the entire show. KOOZA showcases amazing talent not only from the acrobats and clowns, but also from the musicians as well, giving KOOZA even more outstanding and one-of-a-kind!
It was so good I was ready to sit down and watch it all over again the minute it was over. So good that I’m ready to buy tickets now and take my mom to see it! So good that I can’t stop raving about it to my friends and family.
But what did my husband, the reluctant skeptic think? HE. LOVED. IT. He was also on the edge of his seat and was just as ready as I was to watch it all over again! He had told his co-workers we were going, and of course shared with them his lack of enthusiasm. So of course the next day at work they wanted to know what he thought. Here is what he told me, as close to his words as I can remember: “I told them it was seriously awesome, that it was the perfect place to go for date night. It’s something she will like and something you will like too, and it’s different than things you’d normally do for a date night.”
Cirque du Soleil KOOZA is currently in Phoenix, AZ thru July 15th, and then will move on to Texas and Florida before going to London in 2013! Check the Cirque du Soleil site for event details and to purchase tickets!
