Get Crafty with Creativity for Kids Craft Kits- Review and Giveaway

My 6 year-old daughter Brooke is like many girls her age; she loves to do crafts and create beautiful ‘masterpieces’.  Even if it means cutting up pieces of construction paper and pasting them onto bigger sheets of construction paper, she’s happy.  When I heard about the Creativity for Kids sets I knew these would be perfect for her! She could create something lasting and more meaningful.

First she got to create with the Deluxe Glitter Art set. This set comes with tons of stuff including glitter glue, shaker-top glitter pots, glitter stickers, glitter paper, gift tags, envelopes, greeting cards, craft glue, trinket boxes and more.  Brooke was anxious to get started immediately on the trinket boxes, then moved on to the cards and tags.  She was able to do everything without assistance, (other than putting the extra glitter back into the glitter pot), and she really enjoyed herself.  She made a card for her friend Sara who lives out of state, and was full of ideas on how to decorate each thing and who to decorate it for.  She would have loved for there to be more rhinestone stickers, but other than that there was plenty of supplies for her to enjoy.

Next she got to make her own Gnome Garden.  I was eager for her to do this; it’s just so adorable!  This set came with everything you need to create this adorable garden, including garden dish, potting mix, wheat grass seeds, bark house, leaf-shaped pond, mossy rocks, stepping stones, resin gnomes, toadstools, ladybugs, paint, brush and a mister. The garden dish is a good size, measuring 11 inches wide by 2 inches deep. I also love that the natural wheat grass seeds are pet friendly and sprout in just a few days.

First, we had to paint the garden dish, toadstools and stepping stones.  Yes, I said we.  I really wanted help with something! Actually, Brooke wanted her name painted on one of the rocks, as well as ‘Welcome’ painted on another, and doing it tiny with paint would have been far too hard for her, so I happily did it.  I also was given permission (haha) to paint the toadstools.  We had a great time painting together.  I would have liked to have had a bit more paint.  It comes with red, blue and yellow paint, and in order to get the orange and brown paint we had to mix our own.  No problem, except I ended up making far less brown than Brooke needed because we were about out of yellow and I didn’t want to leave her or I without any of it.  There was plenty of the blue and red, however, so that was good.

After painting we assembled the roof for the house.  It is made of thick paper (almost cardstock like) and came flat, requiring you to form it into a cone and adhere with the tiny adhesive on one end (remove the sticky paper to expose adhesive).  After that, glue on the paper leaves to cover the top of the roof.  Seems easy enough, but the adhesive on the paper did not hold and it was very frustrating after having glued on the leaves where we wanted them.  I added some glue over the adhesive and tried again, and once again it came apart. Finally, I just held it in place for about 10 minutes waiting for the glue to dry enough, then added a piece of tape to the inside to hold it in place.
Next, Brooke poured in the potting mix and then we had a blast deciding where the gnomes and such would be placed.  When that was all done, we planted the grass seed and now we’re waiting to see it sprout! It is adorable, and I’m sure we’ll be getting more grass seed once we run out of what was sent in the kit. It’s just so cute and fun!!

Last, we got to create satin headbands for Brooke with the Fashion Headbands set!  We were both anxious to start this kit.  Brooke loves hair accessories and is always wanting more to add to her collection.  Knowing she could customize her own made this even more appealing to her.  This set comes with 10 satin headbands (in assorted colors), rhinestones, flowers, feathers, a butterfly, yards of ribbon and more.

Brooke recently got some new dresses for church and so she was excited to create a headband to match the dress she planned on wearing for church tomorrow. This set says it’s for ages 5-95, so I assumed Brooke could do most of the creating herself like she did with the other 2 sets.  Not so.  While she really enjoyed this kit, I had to do most of the work with her telling me how she wanted it.  It was too difficult for her to wrap the ribbon on the headbands, impossible for her to tie the bows by herself, and very very difficult to make small dabs of glue when gluing on the rhinestones and bows and such.  You may be wondering why the glue thing was worth mentioning. Because the headbands are satin, when too much glue is applied and not completely covered by something, it darkens the color of the satin.  The directions say to use your finger or a damp cloth to wipe off the excess, and although we did that dark spots still appeared when the area dried.  It’s not totally obvious, especially when the headbands are in her hair, but it was still frustrating for her and I both.
That said, we had a blast coming up with different ways to decorate these headbands.  There was plenty of ribbon, rhinestones and other decorations to create each headband, with some left over to use for other crafts (something Brooke is excited about)!  We were both kinda bummed knowing we only had 10 to create, they were just so much fun!  I am quite impressed with how they turned out, and so is Brooke. She loves wearing them, and I imagine she’ll be changing outfits multiple times a day just to be able to wear them all!

We had an absolute blast creating with these kits.  These would make a great gift for any girl (or woman like me who loves to be creative too)!  I think we may end up finding a few other kits to use for Brooke’s birthday party with all her girlfriends; I know they’d love to spend time creating too!

Do these kits look like something your child would love? How would you like to win 2 kits from Creativity for Kids?!
