We love love love ice cream, and chances are pretty high that you’ll see at least a few cartons in our freezer at any given time. I’m always happy with the taste of it, but there’s really nothing like homemade. My best friend’s family is a huge ice cream loving family, and I remember when her mom used to make homemade ice cream. She’d make so many different creative flavors and it was SO good! So when I had the opportunity to review the 4-quart Traditional Ice Cream Maker from Aroma Housewares I was super stoked.
The 4-quart Traditional Ice Cream Maker is fun because you can use a convenient electric motor that will do all the work for you, OR you can have some fun and use the old-fashioned die-cast hand crank and really make it ‘by hand’! It has a traditional solid fir wood buck. The 4-quart capacity means there is enough for the entire family (though I guarantee we’ll be making more than one batch), and the aluminum mixing canister makes for faster freezing (meaning it’s in my belly faster). 🙂 The bucket also has a handle for easier carrying.
Though I’m holding onto this as a “family gift” for Christmas, I did want to take it out of the box and see how the assembly went. It was super fast and easy to assemble both in the electric motor and the hand crank “modes”; the instructions in the included booklet were clear.
The booklet also includes recipes for classic favorite ice cream flavors which I’m glad for because, while I’m going to want to create my own flavors, I do need to learn what to use and how much, etc. You can bet we’ll be starting with the recipe for Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Ice Cream!
I’m glad I looked at the instructions ahead of time though, because before the first use there is some prep-work necessary. The wooden bucket must be filled 2/3 full of water and left for an hour and a half, giving the wood a chance to expand to prevent the salt/ice mixture from leaking out during the freezing process. If I hadn’t read that part, I would have been bummed out to have to wait an additional 1 1/2 hours to make and enjoy my ice cream! 😉
I don’t know about you, but storage is greatly lacking here at our home. For this reason, I was worried about how well the ice cream maker would store. I was relieved when I attempted to put each of the pieces into the bucket and found they all fit.
