Getting Creative in the Kitchen- “Lays Do Us A Flavor Contest” #MC

do us a flavor contestI participated in an Ambassador Activation on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Lay’s. I received a promotional item to thank me for participating.

Last month I shared the Lay’s “Do Us A Flavor” contest with you, as well as a few of our flavor suggestions. In case you missed it here’s the idea;  Lay’s has invited fans nationwide to submit their ideas for the next great Lay’s potato chip flavor for the chance to win a $1 million grand prize (see rules here). A judging panel made up of chefs, foodies and flavor experts will narrow down the contest submissions to four finalist flavors. The four finalist flavors will then be fully developed by Frito-Lay’s culinary experts and unveiled in summer 2014 and sold nationwide. From there, it will be up to fans to vote for the finalist flavor they want to see stay on store shelves, and the finalist behind the winning flavor will take home the million dollar grand prize.  Easy as that!

If you’re a regular reader you know I enjoy cooking and sharing recipes with you.  There’s something about creating a delicious meal for my family that I really find a lot of joy in (most of the time).  I never expected to enjoy cooking, for many reasons; I grew up in a very low-income family, we lived on casseroles, my mom doesn’t enjoy cooking and never taught me…  To my shame, I’m just as bad about teaching my kids- probably worse, since I actually enjoy cooking.  However, I have tried to be better at getting them in the kitchen with me, and my husband is always good about letting them help him out when he cooks. I prefer to let them do the easy things, (and not at dinnertime) that I’m more comfortable with… My kids love grilled sandwiches for lunch, especially when they can grill them themselves!

kids cookinWhether they’re helping me in the kitchen or not, they’re almost always watching me cook.  They offer suggestions, taste test (what kid doesn’t love that?!), and learn by watching.  They have their favorite recipes I make, and their favorites tend to be the ones I make most often- like these:

Most of the recipes I make start with a recipes I found elsewhere. I love to adapt recipes to fit our liking and mix and match recipes based on what I’m looking for, and most times the recipes I end up with are completely different than the original recipe.  While I have tons of success stories, I have as many flops too. So far nothing has been inedible, but I’ve had requests not to make certain recipes again.  That’s all part of the fun though; doing things that sound good to you and then waiting and hoping for the big thumbs up from the family. On those occasions that I get the thumbs down, I make a note and try something different next time.

As for future recipe ideas, I’m always full of them. I’d love to start getting more creative with desserts rather than main dishes, but I’ll have to figure out a way to keep myself from eating it all first… 🙂

I’d love to see any of the above recipes I showed you as the next Lay’s potato chip flavor! Do you have any great flavor ideas for the next Lay’s potato chip? Maybe one of your most creative recipes might be the next million dollar suggestion (see rules here)! Head over to Lay’s and enter the  “Do Us A Flavor” contest. It’s as easy as submitting a flavor name, up to three ingredients, chip style (Lay’s Original, Wavy, and/or Kettle Cooked), and a brief description for the flavor! Contest ends on April 5th, so hurry over! Good luck!

  1. Honestly, I am more than happy with the classic flavors of chips. In fact, Lays original are one of my most favorites!! I don’t really buy in to the funky flavors but it is interesting to read everyone’s great ideas 🙂 And I know a lot of people who are fans of trying out all the new flavors that come out!

    • I definitely think we have a great selection of options already, but there may just be that ONE new flavor that takes the cake… 😉 I’m with you, I love the different suggestions- they are fun!

  2. I would love to see a garlic flavored chip. It may be too close to the sour cream & onion chip, though. But wouldn’t that be yummy!

  3. I always just prefered the original Lay’s flavor, haha. I like to dip them in Cottage Cheese and eat them, it’s so yummy!

    • I’ve never dipped a chip in cottage cheese- will have to try that! Plus, there’s less guilt because you’re having something healthy with your chips, right? Love it! 🙂

  4. I like the original ruffled chip. Those are so good with dip when a craving strikes!

  5. If my husband were to make a flavor he’d go for something spicy. He told me he’d like to make an Adobo Flavor chip.

  6. They could make a gourmet line of chips with your suggestions. You may be totally on to something. 🙂

  7. My bunch we would love a Mac & Cheese chip! Hubby & Davey love the Au Gratin potato flavor!

  8. They might already have it. But, I’d love to see dill pickle as a flavor. Or maybe buffalo!

  9. Double bacon flavor! Cause the other brands are not neryv enough to go double! That;s my signature flavor!

  10. I;m a classic chip eater – no flavor for me….just the original is fine. Lays are my fav.!

  11. I have tried some of the new flavors, only really in passing though. Haven’t yet purchased them (my sister has though!). But, honestly, I typically only buy BBQ chips. They seem to go best with the food I make that require chips as a side. Maybe I need to be more adventurous.

  12. Those recipes look so delicious! I would LOVE to see a chocolate chip cookie flavored potato chip – or a chili flavored one!

  13. I wish they would be able to make the chips with the flavor of my fabulous spinach dip already included. I love your recipes here. I am going to have to try some of them.

    • Oh that would be REALLY good (and save you the time of having to make the spinach dip)! You should definitely suggest that over on the contest page!!!

  14. I like plain basic chips. Maybe a Thai peanut chips?

  15. The Feta and Basil Stuffed Chicken Breast with Lemon Cream Sauce looks So good! This is suuch a fun contest!

  16. I love Lay’s chips and was totally excited to see the creative flavors they came up with previously. I have the Cheesy Garlic Bread ones in my pantry right now and they are delish!

    • OOO, I haven’t had those ones yet- They sound amazing! Will have to look closer for those next time we go to the store!

  17. Your recipes look great. I always enjoy adapting recipes. I’d love to see curry flavored chips.

  18. The spinach and garlic pasta looks amazing – I can’t wait to try it. Maybe not on a chip though, but I’m definitely making that one day!

  19. I love adapting recipes too. My favorite chip is either vinegar or dill pickle. Yep I’m one of those!

  20. my favorite is a plain chip. I know it sounds boring but why mess with perfection

    • No I totally get it… Sometimes less is more! 🙂 I usually like some flavor, but I definitely have those days when all I want is a plain, salty potato chip.
