I participated in an Ambassador Activation on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Lay’s. I received a promotional item to thank me for participating.
Last month I shared the Lay’s “Do Us A Flavor” contest with you, as well as a few of our flavor suggestions. In case you missed it here’s the idea; Lay’s has invited fans nationwide to submit their ideas for the next great Lay’s potato chip flavor for the chance to win a $1 million grand prize (see rules here). A judging panel made up of chefs, foodies and flavor experts will narrow down the contest submissions to four finalist flavors. The four finalist flavors will then be fully developed by Frito-Lay’s culinary experts and unveiled in summer 2014 and sold nationwide. From there, it will be up to fans to vote for the finalist flavor they want to see stay on store shelves, and the finalist behind the winning flavor will take home the million dollar grand prize. Easy as that!
If you’re a regular reader you know I enjoy cooking and sharing recipes with you. There’s something about creating a delicious meal for my family that I really find a lot of joy in (most of the time). I never expected to enjoy cooking, for many reasons; I grew up in a very low-income family, we lived on casseroles, my mom doesn’t enjoy cooking and never taught me… To my shame, I’m just as bad about teaching my kids- probably worse, since I actually enjoy cooking. However, I have tried to be better at getting them in the kitchen with me, and my husband is always good about letting them help him out when he cooks. I prefer to let them do the easy things, (and not at dinnertime) that I’m more comfortable with… My kids love grilled sandwiches for lunch, especially when they can grill them themselves!
Whether they’re helping me in the kitchen or not, they’re almost always watching me cook. They offer suggestions, taste test (what kid doesn’t love that?!), and learn by watching. They have their favorite recipes I make, and their favorites tend to be the ones I make most often- like these:
Top left: Spinach and Garlic Pasta with Pine Nuts
Top right: Chicken Stir Fry
Most of the recipes I make start with a recipes I found elsewhere. I love to adapt recipes to fit our liking and mix and match recipes based on what I’m looking for, and most times the recipes I end up with are completely different than the original recipe. While I have tons of success stories, I have as many flops too. So far nothing has been inedible, but I’ve had requests not to make certain recipes again. That’s all part of the fun though; doing things that sound good to you and then waiting and hoping for the big thumbs up from the family. On those occasions that I get the thumbs down, I make a note and try something different next time.
As for future recipe ideas, I’m always full of them. I’d love to start getting more creative with desserts rather than main dishes, but I’ll have to figure out a way to keep myself from eating it all first… 🙂
I’d love to see any of the above recipes I showed you as the next Lay’s potato chip flavor! Do you have any great flavor ideas for the next Lay’s potato chip? Maybe one of your most creative recipes might be the next million dollar suggestion (see rules here)! Head over to Lay’s and enter the “Do Us A Flavor” contest. It’s as easy as submitting a flavor name, up to three ingredients, chip style (Lay’s Original, Wavy, and/or Kettle Cooked), and a brief description for the flavor! Contest ends on April 5th, so hurry over! Good luck!
