Our Listerine 21-Day Challenge Is Complete- Do Our Mouths Feel Healthier?

Take the ChallengeI received a Target gift card to purchase LISTERINE® Brand products from Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc. and The Motherhood as part of my participation in the LISTERINE® 21-Day Challenge. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this post are my own.

So it’s been 21 days since we began the Listerine challenge (using Listerine toothpaste, flossing and using mouthwash twice a day). They say it takes 21 days to form a habit, and I think I’m pretty much there. I can say without a doubt that I am SO glad I did this.  My mouth has never felt fresher.  As I mentioned in my post at the start of the challenge, I began Invisalign treatments over a month ago. With Invisalign I brush and floss after each meal (or snack), so you’d think my mouth would feel fresh all of the time.  It used to, but now it only feels fresh when I use Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash. On the rare occasions I miss a rinse with Listerine I definitely notice a difference; my mouth doesn’t feel as fresh and I can’t wait to be able to rinse with the Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash when I brush next!

I have super sensitive teeth which require me to brush with a sensitive toothpaste, but I’ve started using the Listerine toothpaste to brush my teeth at least once a day. I like it so much better! I do use it to brush my Invisalign aligners every time now, however. I’d love it if Listerine started making a toothpaste for sensitive teeth too, and would honestly purchase nothing else, ever.

Another awesome thing about the Listerine toothpaste… One thing I noticed after getting my Invisalign aligners is that after a bit, the aligners started to get an odor. It makes sense, since they’re worn for 22 hours of the day (day and night). Of course I googled it and found that this is very very common, and also read a bunch of different ways to get rid of the odor. I tried nearly everything and found nothing that worked well.  Since using the Listerine toothpaste on my aligners and rinsing regularly with Listerine I am thrilled to say I have zero issues with odor. Yes, zero

You know that not-so-fresh feeling in your mouth when you wake up in the morning? I don’t have that. Seriously. The combination of Listerine toothpaste, flossing, and Listerine mouthwash is awesome!

I know some have an issue with the burning of the Antiseptic Mouthwash (my husband, for one). I, too, struggled with that at first, but it didn’t take long before it lessened.  It’s far easier to use it now than it was at first.  I guess it’s kinda like working out… Feel the burn and you know it’s working, right? 😉

So obviously I have come to love Listerine products, but what about the rest of my family?

My husband has used only 1 kind of toothpaste for practically his entire life.  Since the day we got married and I started doing all of the shopping I could only buy him one kind of toothpaste. I’ve tried a few times to switch him to something else and been met with major resistance, so much so that I quit trying. It’s been 11 years, so I am in complete shock when I say that he’s switched to using Listerine toothpaste exclusively, and so quickly too. It’s not because of my prodding, at all. He did this all on his own.  I’d love to say he embraced the entire challenge and started flossing twice a day and rinsing twice a day, but I can’t. However, I’m stoked he’s made any effort at all, and maybe I’ll be able to get him to be better about it one of these days… Perhaps if I put the floss and rinse next to his toothbrush he’ll be more likely. I know that’s helped me, having it in sight while I brush.

Lovin the swishAs for my kids, their teeth and gums are much healthier too. They finally look forward to brushing their teeth so they can use their rinse. Since it removes food particles they miss when brushing (and tints those food particles, showing little chunks of bright blue when they spit out the rinse), it’s given my kids a good look at how bad and lazy they can be when they brush sometimes, and they have tried harder to be better about brushing. They call me in to look in the sink so I can give them props on their good brushing with the lack of chunks in the sink.  I love that it’s given them fun accountability that I had previously struggled to give them.

swishinI’m so glad we’ve had the chance to participate in this challenge. Fostering good oral care habits is important, and I really want my children to learn this now so they’ll have healthier teeth as they grow and when they’re older.

listerine21daychallengeIf you haven’t already taken the Listerine 21-Day Challenge, it’s not too late!! Head to Target and get some LISTERINE® WHITENING® Original Gel Fluoride Anticavity Toothpaste, REACH® Floss, and LISTERINE® Antiseptic. If you have kids, grab some LISTERINE® SMART RINSE® (antiseptic for kids 6+).  Like I said, it only takes 21 days to develop a habit, and this is one habit you’ll be glad to have!  Rinsing with the mouthwash only takes an extra minute a day-you can do this while you apply your makeup, do your hair, or get dressed!

For every person who posts a “Swish Selfie” to LISTERINE® Brand’s Facebook page, LISTERINE® Brand will make a $5.00 contribution to Oral Health America’s Smiles Across America® program, up to $85,000, toward their goal of connecting 210,000 children with needed oral health services in 2014!

  1. I use Listerine on a daily basis. I love how fresh and clean it makes my mouth feel!!

  2. My family loves Listerine products too! I was the same way at first, very sensitive to the burning sensation of the mouth wash. It took a few weeks to get used to but now I love the fresh results!

  3. I love your kids did it with you. My kids always want to do what I do so they’d want their own too!

  4. i can’t wait to try the toothpaste. i’m kind of ‘over’ what we use currently. i just need to find the Listerine!

    • Brett, I couldn’t find it at the Target stores in my area. Googled and found it at a different store (not a Target store) down the street from me. I’m stocking up on my next trip; it’s awesome! 🙂

  5. That’s so funny to hear you say that about your liners – I used to brush and listerine my retainer back in the 90s!

  6. I am pretty anal about brushing and flossing, but I do need to get my kids to be better at it. I actually just had my first cavity at 33 (boo) but it was after not being to the dentist for nearly 10 years(no insurance).
I love Listerine, I even carry a travel size in my purse!

  7. We only use Listerine in our house. We use that exact same mouth wash for our 6-year old, she loves using it and it’s a great incentive for brushing her teeth, it’s like a treat to be able to use mouth wash. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  8. My kids love the Listerine mouth wash too! I’ve never tried their toothpaste though!

  9. Listerine was strictly prohibited for me by my dentist, lol. I’m sure it’s great for others, but my guy would be so upset if I tried this!

  10. How cute are they! My kids love getting to use mouthwash now that they are old enough I can trust them not to swallow it!

  11. I love Listerine mouth wash! I have honestly tried off brands and other brands and they really don’t compete. They don’t have that fresh taste feeling.

  12. Oh my goodness are we twins or what??? Invisalign, the almost same picture and font and fresher breath??? Great minds think alike and love Listerine I guess!!!

    • I noticed that when I commented on your post too, Jennifer! lol I didn’t know you had Invisalign though! How do you like it?
As for the pic, I got lazy and used *almost* the same pic as my first Listerine post (changed the words). It’s a good pic 🙂

  13. We did this challenge last year and it changed my thinking. My boys love to do “swishies.”

  14. This sounds like a great challenge. I use Listerine mouthwash every day.

  15. Wow, impressive! I’m actually so glad to hear that this worked with the odor of the Invisalign mouthpiece. We actually use Listerine but I’m not as good as I should be with it. I did the 21-day challenge last year, I should do it again to get myself back on a good routine with it.

  16. I’m a flosser and a brusher, but always seem to forget to rinse. I do use those Listerine pocket pac melt away thingies though…does that count?! LOL.

  17. This sounds awesome! I really need to get into the habit of doing this. I love the pics!

  18. Krsiten says:

I Use the Purple Listerine. Love it

  19. My husband uses Listerine every day! And I agree on the toothpaste – I’d totally buy a sensitive toothpaste made by them!

  20. I need to try to do this challenge. Because healthy teeth habits is something I need. That is one area of my health I slack on

  21. I need to check out that toothpaste. I always like to see what’s new in the toothpaste aisle!

  22. I need to get in the habit of using all three of those products. I’d have to find something for sensitive teeth though,

  23. Listerine is the only mouthwash we use in our house so I guess I’m already taking the challenge. 🙂

  24. joanna garcia says:

Great idea that it takes 21 days to make a habit and love the idea for the kids wash! did not know they made that i will have to try the toothpaste cause i also have sensitive teeth! great to read that it helped even with the invisalign! I would love to get my kids in the habit of flossing and using mouthwash!

  25. I didn’t know Listerine made a Smart Rinse for kids. Very nice to know!

  26. It looks you had fun doing the 21-day challenge. What a great way to bring attention to oral hygiene. Thanks!!

  27. We had such a great time doing this challenge. I love that it started new habits for our family

  28. I had a plastic retainer I had to wear after my braces were removed and I can remember that thing smelling bad after just a couple days of use! I can’t remember what I used to get rid of the odor now, but I never thought to try Listerine. Now I know!

  29. I’m glad the mouthwash is helping you with the odor- and I’m SO jealous that you got Invisalign! I’ve wanted it for ages.

  30. I’m so glad that you and your family have developed such healthy habits. It’s great that you have found a routine that works, as well as the products to support your healthy habits! Listerine is such an effective brand!

  31. I love mouth wash! It makes my mouth feel so clean and healthy. 🙂

  32. Sigh, I’m at a point where I battle my son with brushing his teeth – he’s at the stage where he’d rather just watch tv or play instead of brushing …. lol. Mom wins though

  33. I love that the whole family took the challenge together. And I like that Listerine made a kid-friendly version.

  34. Eliz Frank says:

Congratulations on your completion and kudos to the kids for sticking to it… The photos of them were so sweet. 😉

  35. Your children’s images of this Listerine campaign are the BEST, I’ve seen! They are so adorable and photogenic.

  36. I have super sensitive teeth as well and sometimes it actually burns my gums when I use mouthwash. I have found that Listerine is one of the only ones I can use on a consistent basis without it causing my teeth to hurt 🙂

  37. Sandra VanHoey says:

We love listerine here, not anothr mouthwash that beats it. My grandson uses the smart rinse a couple times a day after brushing so we always make sure to have that for him.
