Celebrating Friends: My husband and best friend, Gary

In case you missed it, check out the original post for all of the information you’ll need on this fun Celebrating Friends hop!

I couldn’t not start with my husband Gary, my very very best friend.

We met almost 13 years ago at work. The company was owned by a very good family friend, and Gary had worked there for many years before I got there.  I remember the first time I saw him… He walked into the room that I was working in looking for the other lady who I worked under.  He asked for her, I said I had no clue where she was, so he left.  I thought he was kinda cute, but really didn’t think any more of it.

When she came back in I told her there was a young guy who came in looking for her. She looked at me, very perplexed, so I tried explaining what he looked like.  Light hair, braces, kinda dressed like a skater…  She looked even more shocked and then said, “Cheese?!”

Not long after I learned his real name, Gary.  Cheese was a nickname given to him by his brother’s best friend after he learned that Gary’s first job was at Burger King, and it stuck.  (I’m thankful not many people call him that anymore! LOL!)  I also learned that she was looking at me so oddly because Gary was not a “young guy” like I had said. He wasn’t old, but he was almost 30, not the late teen/early 20’s guy I had thought and described…  Gary had a baby face, no doubt!

We became friends pretty quickly, and he entertained me with his goofiness.  I never thought of him anything more than a friend for quite some time.  One day I started to get a little crush on him, but quickly brushed it off.  He was always talking about his girlfriend, and I knew he would have no interest in me, a girl 8 years younger than him with completely different interests.  He was an extreme sports loving guy, who kept himself busy with dirt biking, wakeboarding, snowboarding, and skateboarding.  I coached volleyball, went to church every week and loved kids.

Not long after, he started flirting with me, coming in the room I worked in regularly to be obnoxious or chat or just walk through to make me nervous.  One thing we frequently discussed was movies- which ones we’d seen and liked or which new ones were coming out that we thought looked cool.  One day he came into the room I was working in and asked if I wanted to go see a movie (one that we had been talking about).  I was floored and thrilled, and said, “Sure!”.  He smiled and said, “OK, you go see it and tell me how it is”.  I was SO embarrassed!  For weeks after that he played that game; He’d ask me if I wanted to see a movie, I’d laugh and say ‘sure’ and he’d repeat his phrase.  Until one day, when he asked if I wanted to go see Joe Dirt with him (yes, a great taste in movies, no? Haha)!  I looked at him, confused for sure, and said, “Wait, you said it wrong… You didn’t leave yourself an out”, and he said, “I know, do you want to go see it with me?”  I said yes, then immediately turned to one of our co-workers (a friend of mine) and asked if she wanted to go with us. His smile dropped, and I got the last laugh!  We all went and had a great time and the rest, as they say, is history!

11 years later, he still is a goofball and makes me laugh every day.  I am so thankful to have him in my life, so thankful God brought us together.  It’s no coincidence either…
When I started working there, I prayed every.single.day on my way to work that God would show me who I was supposed to marry.  Never in a million years did I expect to meet that man at my job, but God had it in His plan!  I am so thankful I put that huge, life-altering decision on God’s hands, and I am so thankful to have such an amazing man to call my husband, my best friend…

    Adorable! He's a great guy and you're a lucky girl…he didn't get such a bad best friend/wife either! 🙂

  2. I would have been so embarrassed about the movie question too! LOL I'm glad he finally ended up asking to go to one together.

    What a fun beginning!

  3. Looks at those baby faces! What a goof. I met my husband at work too and never thought that would happen. 🙂
