I’m in my third trimester of pregnancy, about 6 weeks from delivery, and at that point when sleeping isn’t very restful. Anyone who has been pregnant knows what I’m talking about. It’s difficult to find a comfortable position, let alone keep it for more than five minutes. I recently started using the Comfort-U maternity pillow from The Gentle Nest and I don’t know why I waited till my third pregnancy to try one of these! (Seriously if you’re pregnant for the first time and plan on having more kids invest now. It’s totally worth it!) I love it.
When it arrived at my house my husband opened the box and his eyes got about as big as this pillow. The thing is huge, there’s no other way to describe it. But let’s face it when you’re pregnant everything gets bigger; clothing, serving sizes, ankles…so why not your pillow? We have a king size bed and my husband says it takes up most of it. Not exactly true, but when it’s not all tucked in around me it takes up just about half.
My highest praise for this pillow is that it actually supports my back without making me feel like my body is all out of alignment. I’ve never had trouble with backaches before during pregnancy, but this time by the end of the day my back is usually pretty sore. I never feel like I can really stretch it out or rest it well to relieve the strain. That’s where this maternity pillow works it’s magic. When I lay on my side I can tuck it tightly around my back and lean back just enough to take the pressure off those muscles; while the front half of the pillow supports my stomach and knees. I’ve tried using two regular pillows, one for my back and one between my knees and it always felt like it made it worse. It wasn’t giving my back the relief I was desperate for. The position just wasn’t natural so it didn’t really help at all. I suffered through it anyway, but I shouldn’t have. I should have invested in one of these pillows years ago with my first baby! Even though I didn’t have the back trouble, just the overall support of the pillow would’ve been amazing.
The one tragic flaw of this pillow is that it takes some maneuvering when you first get into bed to get everything just right. Then when you have to get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom you have to crawl out of your little cocoon. I usually just throw one side off the edge of the bed, but it’s still more of a hassle than just getting up without the pillow. I see no way to avoid this. If you’re using this pillow you’re pregnant so you know this is a given…any pregnant woman who can make it through the entire night without getting up to go to the bathroom isn’t human…and if you actually can I am EXTREMELY jealous! I hate getting up in the middle of the night. But getting back to the pillow. It’s kind of a pain to get up and then get yourself all situated again, but definitely worth it! It probably only takes about 30 seconds, but I’m seriously impatient when it comes to having my sleep interrupted so any extra time for me is difficult to accept. (Better let that little personality trait go when the baby comes huh?) I also toss and turn a lot during the night, even with this comfy pillow. So I have to reposition myself frequently. But once again, completely worth it for that back relief!
I would definitely recommend the Comfort-U Maternity pillow to anyone in any stage of pregnancy. Or if you have a pregnant family member or friend she will love you forever for having one of these delivered to her door. Have any male friends with a wife who is expecting? Help him win serious bonus points by convincing him to get one of these for her. Tell him it’s worth the space it takes up in his bed. A well rested wife is a happy wife, especially when she’s pregnant! It can also be used after the baby arrives as well for feeding and supporting the postpartum body too. I’m looking forward to getting a lot of use out of mine even after I deliver!
